  • Elisha Otis
  • Professionalization Shaped the US Economy
  • Women's Roles in Different Classes
  • Cities began to run out of space to expand so instead, they built up and made buildings taller. The elevator, invented by Elisha Otis, made this practical.
  • Settlement House
  • Cities were able to expand as people moved away from them. The upper and middle class would work and then be able to go home away from all the city noise and smells. The working class, however, was not able to do that.
  • Jane Addams
  • Women of the upper class read guides that portrayed the ideal women to stay at home and entertain. The middle class women would often work as sales clerks, secretaries, and typists but stopped working once married. The working class women worked low-paying jobs as well as maintaining their homes.
  • Social Gospel
  • A settlement house was a place where people in need could go to receive a variation of services. But instead of hand outs, it taught them useful skills they could use to help themselves while in poverty which is what helped relieve poverty.
  • She founded one of the first settlement houses. It was in Chicago and called the Hull House, this lead to many others opening in US cities. Many women worked in them because they couldn't work elsewhere and this gave them a chance to organize, lead, and improve life for others.
  • Social Gospel is Christian faith practiced as a call not just to personal conversion but to social reform. And Social Darwinism is the theory that individuals, groups, and peoples are subject to the same Darwinian laws of natural selection as plants and animals.
