Hattie McDaniel was born on June 10, 1895 in Wichita, Kansas. She was one of 13 children born to a baptist father and gospel singing mother.
Hattie sang all throughout her childhood, especially at her church.
When she was 15 she dropped out of school to become a full-time performer with her dads show group, until they were dismembered during the 20's.
Next Stop: Milwaukee, Wisconsin 3 miles east
After, she traveled between many singing groups and shows until the end of the 20's.
In 1925, while living in Denver, Colorado she became one of the first African Americans to perform on the radio.
When the market crashed in 1929, she moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin to seek out employment.
