  • Once upon a time in Oxford there was a rich old carpenter named John. He lived with his beautiful wife, Alison, and his poor apprentice, Nicholas. Nicholas was very proficient in astronomy. John is very cautious about his pretty wife.

  • Over time, Alison and Nicholas fall in love. One night, Nicholas acts like he made an astonishing astronomical discovery that an event like Noah's flood is coming. Alison and Nicholas convince John that he must sleep in a barrel tied to the roof to survive.
  • falling action
  • Meanwhile, Absolon, a guy attending church with Alison fancies her and tries to win her over many times unsuccessfully. When he asks for a kiss, he finds himself kissing Alison's posterior. An furious Absolon borrows a scalding iron from the blacksmith, Gervase.
  • resolution
  • Absolon returns to Nicholas and Allison and asks for another kiss. This time, when Nicholas sticks his posterior out of the window, Absolon burns Nicholas with his iron. Nicholas cries " Water, help", causing John to cut the ropes tying his barrel to the roof.
  • John tumbles down in the barrel, attracting the attention of many townspeople who come to watch. This was Alison and Nicholas's plan all along.
  • Taking advantage of John's situation, Alison and Nicholas tell the townspeople that he is insane so they can live together without him. All in all, the story ends with Nicholas burned but happy with Alison, Absolon revenged, and John injured.
