  • A man named Singaram lived in a hut by the sea, and one day he caught a fish that promises to help him.
  • Middle
  • The fish offers to help the man with his cow. The fish talks to it, and can control the cow with its voice.
  • Middle
  • The cow wanders away and the fish can't get him to go back. The man finds them and beats the cow with a stick, but the fish says no to, and the man believes it is the cow talking, so he stops.
  • End
  • The man gets rich off of the milk that the cow produces for him, and he builds a lavish house. He has a handsome son, and is lamenting one day about not having a bride for him.
  • The fish hears this, and then turns into a beautiful young woman. She says that she is cursed to turn back into a fish by night, though. They are happily wedded, but the man wishes that she could always be a woman.
  • One night the man observes that she takes a bath in the sea before getting into her fish skin and turning back, so he takes her fish skin and burns it, and the spell is broken. They live happily ever after.
