Storyboard Text

  • Indirect characterization
  • Scrooge is indirectly characterized as a rude and miserable man. He refuses to donate money to the poor when the two portly gentlemen come by. Scrooge says that if the poor cannot support themselves, they should either go to jail or die.
  • "If they would rather die, they better do it and decrease the surplus population."
  • "You wish to be left anonymous?"
  • Internal conflict
  • Scrooge has an internal conflict because he has to change or else he will end up just like Marley. One he dies, he will have to go on as a ghost with ponderous chains representing all his sins.
  • "It is required of every man, that the spirit within him should walk abroad among his fellow men and if that spirit does not go forth in life, it is condemned to do so after death."
  • Theme
  • The affects of memories. Scrooge did not like his past because he was neglected as a child and he lost the love of his life. It affected the way he acts now because he was trying to hide from his past.
  • "A solitary child, neglected by his friends, is left there still."
  • Symbolism
  • The Ghost of Christmas Present represents England at the time. England used to hide their problems by sending people away. The children were hiding under his robe like his problems.
  • This boy is ignorance. This girl is want.
  • Have they no refuge or resource?
  • Symolism
  • The spirit points and does not talk because you cannot speak the future. He only shows Scrooge what will happen if he does not change but his future is not certain. The outcome of Scrooge will depend on his choices that he makes.
  • The spirit answered not but pointed onward with its hand.
  • "I am in the presence of the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come?"
  • This scene is showing that Scrooge's personality is changing. If Scrooge does do the things that he said he would, he will be characterized as a kind and giving man who enjoys the holidays.
  • Indirect Characterization
  • "I will honor Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all year. The Spirits of all Three shall strive within me. I will not shut out the lessons that they teach."
  • For the first time the hand appeared to shake.
