In this scene, Cole is trying to calm himself down like he usually does, in the lake. Though it is very cold, he is used to it. This helps him focus and stay calm for the rest of the day.
After Cole gets out of the river, he picks up the ancestor rock and climbs up the hill.
When Cole gets to the top, he takes the rock, and acts the rock is his anger. He puts all his anger into it, and rolls it away, to the bottom of the hill again, so he can do the same routine the next day.
