Storyboard Text

  • Elizabeth starts telling Karl about the elephant in her garden when she was younger.
  • "So I was born on the ninth of February, 1929, in Dresden, in Germany…"
  • February, 1945. Elizabeth's 16th birthday...
  • Mutti brings Marlene home for Elizabeth's birthday present and because their will be a bombing in Dresden and she doesn't want her to get killed.
  • "The Herr Direktor told us that very regrettably, it has been decided that we must destroy most of the animals."
  • When Dresden gets bombed, Mutti, Elizabeth, and Karli go to their Aunt Lotti and Uncle Manfred's farm. They find a man in the barn; the enemy. British. RAF.
  • Something's wrong
  • "Aunt Lotti, she keeps that stove of hers going all the time, winter or summer, I know she does. There is no smoke coming out of the chimney."
  • "Yes, all the way, if we can keep going, if we get lucky."
  • Mutti, Karli, Elizabeth, and Peter decide to travel to America, but while traveling, Marlene runs away and doesn't come back.
  • "Can that compass thing really guide us to the Americans?"
  • Welcome to the CIRCUS
  • The star of the show was an elephant, and I knew as soon as I set eyes on her that it was Marlene.
  • They all make it to America. About 10 yrs. later, Elizabeth and Peter get married. Then, one summer evening, about 30 yrs. later Peter and Elizabeth go to the circus in Toronto, and they find Marlene again.
  • 30 yrs. later...
  • "Yours now, Karl. You keep it. You look after it, and look after my story too."
  • Elizabeth finishes her story, then she gives the compass to Karl. She tells him to continue telling her story.
