Socs vs. Greasers
Ponyboy and Johnny are best friends, they are always there for each other. The gang saved Johnny from being further abused by his parents. Johnny keeps Ponyboy in-check, Ponyboy always listens to Johnny and Johnny always listens to Ponyboy. Johnny impacted Ponyboy a lot because he was one of the few people he could relate to. Johnny helps Ponyboy stay gold.
The Socs vs. Greasers conflict is talked about and shown throughout the whole story, such as the park incident and the rumble. Ponyboy feels like he doesn't know why he's fighting the socs, he doesn't have a reason like everyone else does. Ponyboy isn't a "normal" Greaser, and He just fights because everyone else does and he feels like he needs to. Johnny feels the same way, he doesn't feel like fighting is the answer, unlike the rest of the greasers.
The church impacted both Ponyboy and Johnny in a big way. Ponyboy doesn't enjoy the church, it's where he spent some of his last days with Johnny, and they were just trying to survive there. I don't think Ponyboy really felt safe in the church, they didn't know where anyoe was until Dallas told them. The church is the place that the fire started, and that might've been the beggining of the end for Ponyboy.
