Storyboard Text

  • Hi, I'm Dr. Lojowska, this is Dr. Gladwin, Dr. Hermans and Dr.Roelofs, we are from the Donders Institute for Brain & Behavior at Rodbound University!
  • We sought to reveal the correlation between freezing & visual perception to advance our understanding of primary defensive reactions & enhanced performance under threat.
  • Our research paper is titled: Freezing Promotes Perception of Coarse Visual Features. Lojowska, Gladwin, Hermans, & Roelofs, 2015
  • Did you know that an evolutionary defense mechanism, which promotes visual perception and is known to immobilize & decrease heart rate is freezing! In life-threatening situations, freezing is crucial! Particularly, freezing is linked to increased perception of coarse low spacial frequency features (LSF).
  • Anticipation of a threat improves perception of LSF. These findings give empirical evidence to the comobilization of physiological & perceptual processes, which potentially have a huge impact on decision making under stress!
  • LSF information is involved in action modulation and is processed rapidly in the brain, whereas, HSF provides information of fine details for object recognition and it is processed relatively slow. LSF perception allows us to use coarse threat-relevant features i.e., location, to make rapid decisions. Thus, showing that LSF perception during freezing is crucial for rapid decision making in time sensitive threatening situations.
  •
  • Our Methods: 1st- participants filled out BDI & questionnaire, 2nd- we took a sample characterization and 3rd- we gave the task instructions; Fixate on dot & try not to blink!
  • A green dot will not result in a shock, therefore, it is a safe condition
  • A red dot will result in a 50% chance of receiving an electric shock
  • HUH?!
  • SAFE: NO SHOCK!
  •
  • THREAT: SHOCK!
  •
  • OUCH
