British soldiers were sent to the American colonies to maintain order. This created immediate resentment from the American colonists, since the red coats did not have a reputation of high moral standards. When the British soldiers arrived, the colonist were obliged to provide them with housing and food no matter the circumstances in which they lived in. If the colonists did not provide these or any other pleasure the soldiers had, they would've been sent to jail. The Most of the colonists weren't able to live a dignifying life. They were left with nothing to feed their families with.
