  • John Peter Zenger is asked to print an article about the New York governor
  • Will you print this for us ? 
  • John Peter Zenger prints and releases the paper 
  • Extra Extra
  • Cosby has the paper burned 
  • The Morrrisites wanted to send the governor back to England and needed someone to print info about the governor for them.  There was another paper the New York Gazette but they were printed by a strict Cosby supporter. So they asked John Peter Zenger who owned a printing shop. 
  • Accused 
  • On November 5, 1773 the first issue of The New York Weekly Journal came out.  It contained articles criticizing Cosby and his administration.  
  • Crown vs Zenger 
  • My client is not guilty. 
  • Some of John Peter Zenger’s journals, entitled The New York Weekly Journal, Nos. 7, 47, 48, 49, were ordered to be burned by Cosby
  • Zenger is freed
  • You may go now
  • Zenger is arrested and charged with seditious libel. He was imprisoned on the second floor of city hall. 
  • Andrew Hamilton stepped forward from the crowd and said John Zenger had committed no crime. The judge saw Zenger as guilty, so Hamilton confronted the jury. The jury decides that Zenger is not guilty. 
  • Zenger is freed the day after it has been decided he is not guilty.
