Free people of color were people that were successful in finding land in America. These people are seen as some of the many American quintessential heroes.
Free people of color were mainly escaped slaves that came from the Caribbean and Latin America.
Before the war, they were treated regularly. Everybody was fine with them but after the war everybody was more strict with them.
