One day, Helen Stoner came to Sherlock Holmes' detective agency in quite of a worry. She told him about her fear of her father in law because of his anger. She told Holmes about her sister who died a while before. She was worried that she would die herself.
Ms. Helen Stoner brought Sherlock and Watson to her step-father's house. He was a fan of India and he had a cheetah and a baboon. There was construction of the part of the house where Helen slept. Because of this, Helen had to sleep in her dead sisters room. The exact room where her sister died.
Sherlock Holmes investigated the room. He decided it best for Ms. Stoner to stay at a nearby hotel so that he could investigate what was happening during the night. During the night, he heard a soft whistle and saw a light coming through a bell pull. The light was coming from the room.
Holmes discovered the father-in-law dead. There was a poisonous snake beside him. Sherlock put the snake in its cage and discovered that this was murder. The father-in-law did not know Ms. Stoner was at the hotel. He tried to fit the snake into the bell hole. He murdered her sister because she was getting married. If she got married he would have to pay a large sum of money for the marriage.
Ms. Stoner thanked Sherlock for saving her life. Sherlock and Watson then walked back to their detective agency.
Sherlock Holmes and Watson went on to solve many more cases after the case of the speckled band.
