  • After Jefferson's 2 terms, James Madison was elected as the 4th president of the United States. He decided to go to war with England in the war of 1812.
  • Madison becomes president
  • New president in town!
  • The British impressed American sailors as they tried to trade with France. Americans also found British weaponry after a battle with Native Americans on the frontier.

  • The first phase of the war was the Great Lakes and Canada. This stage was fought mostly by the navies of both countries.
  • Phase one: Great Lakes and Canada.
  • In phase two of the war England's strategy was to attack the East coast and set up a blockade of ships surrounding the U.S. In 1814 Fort McHenry, in Maryland was attacked by the British. It was a hard battle but America came out on top. We got our National Anthem written by Francis Scott Key from this battle.

  • In the Battle of New Orleans Colonel Andrew Jackson led the United States to victory over the British. The Americans succeeded in preventing the British from gaining a foothold in the southern territories of the country. This made Jackson a war hero and got him recognized.

  • The Embargo Act of 1807 forced the United States to manufacture their own goods because they would not be able to trade for foreign goods. This made business in the North and started the Industrial Revolution.
