The Pope and the Byzantine Emperor are arguing over different details of the church. They have different beliefs about the use of icons, who should be the head of the church, as well as who is the highest church official.
The Pope and the Byzantine Emperor split the church into two parts, the Roman Catholic and the Eastern Orthodox churches. There was one thing that they agreed on though, this was called the Nicene Creed.
The final split was not wanted by either churches, but they didn't give in. They were both telling each other that they were straying farther and farther from the Catholic faith, and as neither gave in, they have remained separate since.
