The neighbors confronted Les Goodman about the situation.
Fear and Suspicion are destructive forces.
They also blamed Steve for being a "monster" or having a part in this situation.
In the end they thought it is was Tommy.
The Residents of Maple Street confronted Les Goodman about having a part in this situation. His car started by itself. Also, he gets up in the wee hours of the morning to look up st the sky.
After Les Goodman's car started, the neighbors assumed that Steve had cooperation in this because he defended Les Goodman. he mainly said that " we are going to tear ourselves apart , blaming each and every neighbor."
In the beginning of the story, before Pete Van Horn went to go check the Floral Street , Tommy told them not to leave. When they asked why, Tommy said "because they (monsters) don't want us to leave," as if he knew something.
