Situational Irony in The Necklace
Mathilde wants to go to the ball but doesn't want to go without proper jewelry so she borrows her friend's diamond necklace to wear.
After the ball, Mathilde discovers that the diamond necklace is gone. She reasons she must've lost it on the ride home. Too scared at what her friend will think if she tells her she lost it, Mathilde buys another necklace. It turns out at the end of the story that, the first necklace wasn't even made of real jewels and wasn't worth as much as the replacement.
