  • Popular Sovereignty
  • Chuck was a white abolitionist who lived Kansas. He wished to end slavery
  • Dred Scott Decision
  • After hearing about the California Gold Rush, he rushed to California and bought a home, hoping to strike rich, but ended up bankrupt
  • John Brown 
  • Chuck went back to Kansas, but was dismayed by the Kansas-Nebraska Act, due to the fact that he was against popular sovereignty, which allowed states to vote whether they wanted slaves or not
  •                 Election of Abraham Lincoln
  • He was also angered by the Dred Scott decision, which classified slaves as property
  • Chuck was an avid supporter of John Brown's raid on Harpers' Ferry and was saddened by Brown's death
  • After Abraham Lincoln was elected as President of the United States, Chuck was elated. Above is a daguerreotype of Chuck and other elated citizens standing with their new President
