Duke Theseus, ruler of Athens, is returning home when he is approached by some women who beg him to bring justice to King Creon of Thebes who refuses to bury their husbands. Theseus travels to Thebes and is victorious. He returns home for the second time with the princes of Thebes, Palamon and Arcita, who are imprisoned.
One day, Palamon and Arcita see Duke Theseus's sister, the beautiful Emily, wandering around the garden palace and both instantly fall in love. They quarrel over who deserves her love, but finally realize that neither of them can do anything about it while in prison.
Shortly after, Arcita is freed by a friend of the Duke, however he is exiled from Athens. Arcita eventually sneaks back into Athens to win over Emily. Meanwhile, Palamon manages to escape prison and the two duel. Before either is killed, Theseus intervenes and it is eventually decided that both will return 12 months from today with 100 knights and battle for Emily's hand.
The day comes and Palamon, with the Goddess Venus on his side, and Arcita, with the God Mars on his side, meet in the arena. Saturn promises Venus that Palamon will eventually win over Emily. The two sides then battle and Arcita is declared winner. However, Arcita falls off his horse afterwards and is injured severly.
Arcita soon realizes he has little time to live. His last wish is that Palamon takes his place and marry Emily. He dies majestically soon after.
Arcita is grieved for by Emily and Palamon at his royal funeral. Years later, Theseus calls for Palamon and Emily to be married and they live happily ever after.
