Hi my name is Hazel Swain. My family and I live on a farm in Texas. Life is hard due to the stock market crash and the dust storms.
FDR's New Deal Program called AAA is supposed to help farmers across the country. My dad got some money to not plant as much, and it made our crops worth more money.
The little amount of money we have gotten isn't enough to live on. We have decided to move up north because we are no longer getting any profit from the farm. We know our journey will be hard, but we are hopeful.
We had traveled for two days when I saw something I'd never seen before. It was a Hooverville. A bunch of people had built small, run-down houses really close together. The people there were very poor, even more than my family was.
Passing through Missouri, we saw hundreds of sharecroppers that had been kicked out of their homes. When the landlords kicked them off of their land, they didn't have anywhere to go.
We finally made it to Chicago. I experienced new things on the way here, and hopefully we can make a good life here. My parents hope to find new jobs in factories.
