Luigi Vampa holds Albert hostage and expects to be paid a ransom. Franz wishes to rescue his friend, but his credit is almost exhausted, so he asks for the Count's help. When they get to Vampa, Albet is asleep, not worried about the ransom, and neither the Count, nor Franz has brought the ransom. The Count knows Vampa, and the bandit apologizes for taking Monte Cristo's friend, as he had swore not to cross the Count or his friends. Now, Albert is in debt to the Count, and the latter requests to be introduced into Parisian society. He promises to visit Albert in exactly 3 months and 10:30 am
3 months later, the Count visits Albert and his friends for a 10:30 lunch, as promised. The people in attendance are the Minister's secretary, Monsieur Beauchamp, journalist Lucien Debray, Baron Chateau- Renard, and his "saviour" Maximilien Morrel. The Count is dressed immaculately and acts as a perfect gentlemen. He entertains the men with his fantastic stories of his wealth, backing up his story with a large, hollowed- out emerald that holds opium pills.
While at lunch, the Count finds out that Albert is engaged to Eugenie Danglars, the daughter of the same Danglars he had sworn revenge upon. Also, he hears from Maximilien that Morrel's daughter, Julie has been married for 9 years, thanks to Sinbad the Sailor saving their family.
The Count again impresses the men with the news of his 2 Parisian houses, one at 30 Champs Elysses, and the other in a Paris subdivision, Antuil. When asked by Beauchamp if he would like to be introduced to Paris society at the opera, the Count refuses, as he does not wish to be indebted to anyone.
