An assignment for World Lit and Comp, a storyboard for one of our short stories.
Exposition- In the beginning of the story, peasants from all around Goderville were coming to town for market-day.
The Piece of String by Guy de Maupassant
Rising Action 1- M. Hauchecorne found a piece of string, and M. Malandain saw him. "Maître Hauchecorne....had just arrived at Goderville...when he perceived on the ground a little piece of string." (1)
Rising Action 2- M. Hauchcorne was accused of picking up the pocketbook, when all he picked up was the string. "You will not make me believe...that M. Malandain...has mistaken this string for a pocket-book." (3)
Climax- M. Hauchecorne was soon cleared of suspicion, but was considered a liar because of his story. "All day he talked of his adventure...on Tuesday of the next week he went to market at Goderville, prompted entirely by the need of telling his story." (4)
Falling Action- He kept repeating his story, adding more and more details that made it unbelievable. "The peasant was choked. He understood at last. They accused him of having had the pocket-book brought back by an accomplice...." (4)
Resolution- M. Hauchcorne went mad from his tale and eventually died. "...and, in the delirium of his death-agony, he protested his innocence..." (5)
Theme- Those that are innocent but keep stretching the truth will look like liars in the end.
