John and Jenny talk about their love for animals, especially dogs, and they agree to search for a dog that they both agree on. Jenny believes that getting a dog would be good practice before they decide to have a kid.
"On the way to go look at puppies John realizes the huge responsibility of two people working full-time jobs raising a dog. But they both were aware of what they were in for since as children they both had dogs they grew up with." he thought (Page 6) Yet, they were unable to both agree on a name which caused them to argue for weeks until they both had agreed on the name Marley.
After a few weeks of owning Marley, John had realized that he is nothing like the dog he grew up with and Marley was an out of control monster! He would clear coffee tables, knock pictures down, scatter magazines and send glasses flying and breaking them so they gave him the name Mr. Wiggles. "Marley didn't actually wag his tail. He more wagged his whole body." John said (Page 25)
Later on in the book after months of trying to train Marley and all the hassle, trouble and arguing they went through, John realized that Marley wasn't so bad after all and was a great dog. They decided to finally have kids and become one little happy family. But not all went as planned.
