  • The Battle of Vicksburg
  • The Battle of Cold Harbor
  • The Battle of Petersburg
  • May 18th-July 4th, 1863 - Northern victory The Union's victories at Champion Hill and Big Black Bridge weakened Pemberton’s forces. They left the Confederate chief with no other choice but to retreat to Vicksburg's defenses.
  • May 31st-June 12th 1864 - Southern victory The Union troops drove the Confederates beyond the crossroads where they began to build defensive trenches & was the last major battle of Ulysses S. Grant's Overland Campaign. He was prepared to fight a long war but hoped for a quick battle.
  • June 9th 1864-March 25th 1865 - Northern victory This was a series of battles around Petersburg, Virginia where the Confederates surrounded the city on three sides and stretched for nearly 10 miles. They created a strong defense but still lost to the Union troops.
