May 18th-July 4th, 1863 - Northern victory The Union's victories at Champion Hill and Big Black Bridge weakened Pemberton’s forces. They left the Confederate chief with no other choice but to retreat to Vicksburg's defenses.
May 31st-June 12th 1864 - Southern victory The Union troops drove the Confederates beyond the crossroads where they began to build defensive trenches & was the last major battle of Ulysses S. Grant's Overland Campaign. He was prepared to fight a long war but hoped for a quick battle.
June 9th 1864-March 25th 1865 - Northern victory This was a series of battles around Petersburg, Virginia where the Confederates surrounded the city on three sides and stretched for nearly 10 miles. They created a strong defense but still lost to the Union troops.
