Storyboard Text

  • My family and I are farmers, and want to settle in that new western territory. I also support the extension of the Transcontinental Railroad to connect more cities.
  • I, Stephen Douglas, come from Illinois to propose an act that will extend the current state of Kansas. The status of slavery there will be up to the people, instituting 'popular sovereignty'.
  • Popular sovereignty will decide the legality of slaves in these states.
  • Us Northerners are furious! The Missouri Compromise will be nullified if this act is passed.
  • The act will allow slavery to expand beyond southern borders and upset the balance of free states. This will benefit us Southerners.
  • The 36th was supposed to be a compromise between the North and South, but this act will completely overturn this.
  • Despite intense opposition, the Senate and House pass this act. The clause concerning popular sovereignty is sure to cause a voting commotion back in Kansas and Nebraska. The President has troops on deck to settle any violence over terms of slavery.
  • Look at all these Northerners trying to come and vote against slavery, this is voter fraud!
  • Douglas's act is an attack on the power of free states in this country. Slavery should be contained in the South!
