  • "One day that Tom Walker had been to a distant part of the neighborhood, he took what he considered a shortcut homeward, through the swamp. The swamp was thickly grown with great gloomy pines and hemlocks, some of them ninety feet high, which made it dark at noonday, and a retreat for all the owls of the neighborhood...."

  • When his wife was killed by the devil he was kind of happy she was gone, and also after a while he felt guilty for working for the devil towards the end.
  • Disdain for the City
  • After he was working for the devil he might have wanted his old life and be free.
  • Tom was nice to all the people in the town I don't think he had any issues with anyone.
