  • Relationship of Men and Women and Beliefs about Gender Roles
  • Nature of Man
  • Origins of Good and Evil
  • Humans were created equal, but the sole creator was a woman, who had two male children, Glooskap and Malsum, whom shared power as good and evil. Therefore, the woman were seen as if they possessed a power, which they did, the one to reproduce. So in the Algonquian tribe, men hunted and protected their families, while women would farm and watch over the children (a much important task).
  • Relationship of Men and Women and Beliefs about Gender Roles
  • Humans were created from a good source (Earth Mother) with the purpose of being equal with all other forms of life and the environment. Therefore, the Algonquians treated the land as a gift, they moved to allow animals to increase in population without being hunted, and cherished crops with festivities.
  • Nature of Man
  • The creator (Earth Mother) created both good and evil and gave them equal power; including that of being able to revive from death and live forever. Both goof and evil are Earth Mother's sons, Glosskap and Malsum (respectively). The Algonquians believed there was, is, and always will be a source of good as well as a source of evil, and it was up to them to choose the correct path to follow since both good and evil were created from the Earth Mother (their main goddess).
  • Origins of Good and Evil
  • Men and women each have different roles and functions (men care, protect, provide; women care, reproduce, depend on). The man is superior to the woman because of their creation. Having come from dirt through the word of God and having the gift of a thinking mind, it is interpreted by the Christian faith that men are to be treated above women.
  • Men and women were created in the image of God.Men were created from dirt by word of God, and women were created from man (man's rib to be precise). The first man was called Adam, and the first woman, created to be the man's companion, was called Eve.
  • God, the creator of everything, was the ultimate source of good. In his kingdom, Heaven, one of his saints turned against him, and his punishment became to walk the Earth among the mortals. He became evil, and convinced Adam & Eve to eat from the forbidden tree. As a second punishment, he was forced to slide through the land, having his 4 extremities eliminated, to become what is now a serpent.
