"Are you awake, Emily? Can I get you something?"
Distance causes tension.
Emily used to call for her mother in the middle of the night but she would never come to comfort her so now she doesn't want her mothers affection.
"No, I'm all right, go back to sleep, Mother."
Love is needed.
"She'd push me away."
Emily's mother attempted to comfort her after she got home from the convalescent home. She thought this would help but it ended up hurting their relationship more.
"She was too vulnerable for that terrible world of youthful competition, of preening and parading, of constant measuring of yourself against every other, of envy."
While she was at the convalescent home, she wrote her mother once a week. She wrote bland sentences such as, "I am fine." she didn't go into any detail as to how she actually was. the separation between the mother and daughter caused this tension.
Emily didn't get the love she needed causing her to be sad.
"She was a child seldom smiled at."
"She was dark and thin and foreign-looking in a world where the prestige went to blondness and curly hair and dimples."
