Throughout his whole life, Gatsby battles with himself. He lives in a dream world where Daisy has always loved him and life was a party. The thematic topic Failure of the American Dream is seen though Gatsby when he finally comes to terms with reality at the scene of his death
Daisy battles society when she decides to marry Tom because she knows Gatsby will never have a title and won't be able to provide for her like Tom can.
Tom battles Gatsby in chapter 7 when they argue whether Daisy loves Tom or Gatsby. This is one of the high points of the novel when Tom and Gatsby finally battle it out.
