  • Extra Note: This will to acquire all of this land eventually let America acquire that land
  • After all, we did just buy the land west of the Mississippi River.
  • Congress, we need to learn more about our newly acquired territory, so I am very glad that I have persuaded you to sponsor an expedition into our new land. The land across the continent will be our estate. That is our right. This is our Manifest Destiny.
  • You are right, President Jefferson, we do need to explore the land west of the Mississippi.
  • Yes, President Jefferson.
  • Meriwether Lewis, I have chosen you and William Clark to lead the expedition across the west. Are you up for the job?
  • May 14th in a St. Louis area camp
  • Okay, men, we need to go meet up with Meriwether Lewis. There are nearly 4 dozen of you, so you will all be a great help to the expedition.
  • May 20th on the Missouri River
  • Hi William Clark. Are you ready to begin the Corps of Discovery?
  • Yes. Lets gather our men. I
  • We have almost traveled 4,000 miles, and it has taken us 18 months, but we have arrived at the Pacific Ocean. 33 of us, including Sacagawea have encountered hardships like starvation, bear attacks, along with others. We will stay here for the winter and then head back home.

  • Sacagawea was such a great help on this expedition!
  • Extra Note: Sacagawea was a Shoshone Indian.
  • September of 1806
  • We now have valuable information about the land to the west, along with the animals, plants, and People. We also learned that there was no waterway across the entire continent.
