  • ELMIRA PRISON
  • i am Col. William Hoffman and i am in command of Elmira prison.
  • Elmira was one of the deadliest union operated P.O.W camp.
  • Elmira was opened to keep Confederate prisoners of war
  • many innocent Americans were tortured by other Americans and died as prisoners of war in elmira
  • Elmira prison is located in upstate New York.
  • imprisoning Confederate soldiers since July 1864
  • I, Steve McDaniel kept meticulous record of each Confederate burial. so in 1907 federal government authorized to put headstones at each grave, it was possible to inscribe them with the soldiers name, company regiment, and grave number.
  • This impacted the civil war and/or our nation because many Americans were treated badly & some even died as P.O.W in Elmira as well as other prisoners in other prisons .
  • camps were filthy and prisoners lacked sanitation and food.
  • There was a parole process in the beginning of the war.
  • Elmira had a nickname, Hellmira.
