Storyboard Text

  • Pay for Continental Soldiers at the end of the War
  • 80 dollars!?! They said this was worth 120 dollars!
  • Where is the rest of our money?
  • Massachusetts Debt
  • We are taking your land because you didn't pay taxes!
  • You can't do this! This is my farm!
  • August 29th in North Hampton
  • You can't take away our stuff and think we will do nothing about it!!
  • The United States owed a lot of debt. To pay the soldiers they gave them savings bonds which the soldiers turned in before they could recieve the full amount of money. I think this was wong. They could have paid them with something else, such as land.
  • September 25th-28th
  • We are with Shays and we won't let you take away our rights!
  • Massachusetts government decided to tax the citizens. If the citizens didn't pay the tax, they would have their house and land taken away. I believe this was wrong. They already weren't being paid fairly for their time in the army. This is why it was wrong.
  • Shays' New Plan
  • On August 29th, a group of farmers closed the Hampshire County Court of Common Pleas. Bringing all foreclosures to a halt. Other farmers shut down courts in other towns. I believe this was right, if they didn't they would still be unfairly punished.
  • The Editor of the Massachusetts Centinel's Observation
  • Shays' own band of 600 farmers, occupied the Springfield courthouse. They prevented the Supreme Judicial Court from being there. I do believe this was right, they would have been unfairly taxed if they didn't. This is why their decision was right.
  • Light the records on fire!!!
  • Shays and his men settled on a new plan. They decided they would mount a surprise attack and overrun the new federal arsenal at Springfield. I believe this was wrong. It led to 200 men being captured and 5 being killed. This is why their decision was wrong.
  • We need a plan...
  • We can attack the arsenal!!
  • "...late insurrections in the Commonwealth...must be considered as the cause of bringing [the federal government] into existence, at a much earlier period than would have been." I agree with this. He is saying if they didn't do it then they would suffer longer.
  • No, that doesn't sound right... How about "Late insurrections in the Commonwealth...."
