  • Welcome to the Han Dynasty in 102 CE! We will explore the warfare, government, agriculture, industry, art, medicine, and science under the Han rule!
  • 23.1
  • The Hans had a massive army of 130K to 300K people. Every man had to serve at least two years in the army that were age 26 to 60.
  • 23.2
  • The government of the Hans is a bureaucracy. Hans based their work and on ability. To become civil servants, students had to pass a long exam.  Servants couldn't serve their own district.
  • 23.3
  • Farmers had to grow enough food to feed their families and to stock the grain storehouses. Farmers had tough lives. They had to make their own things,and work for one month unpaid. Many inventions were made to help them, like the chain pump, plow, and wheelbarrow
  • 23.4
  • The Han government controlled the two most important industries, salt and silk. Silk was in high demand, so machines were used to process silk quick and efficient. Art flourished with the invention of paper. Paper influenced not only calligraphers, but how people communicated.

  • The Chinese believed that illness was caused when the forces of yin and yang were out of balance. The Chinese developed two ways for healing, acupuncture for short-term, and moxibustion for long-term. The Chinese also invented two very useful instruments, the seismograph and magnetic compass
