  • Constantinople was built in the seventh century, built in the city of Byzantium, by Constantine.

  • Long,Long ago an emperor by the name of Diocletian ruled from 284 to 305 and during his rein he decided that the empire was too big so he split it into 2. Constantine father ruled the west and Diocletian ruled the east. Once Constantine´s father died Constantine took power. He then took full power of the west in 312 BCE. Constantine then challenged and ultimately defeated Lucinius , reuniting the empire. Constantine was then unsure where to locate his new capital.
  • The New Capital Constantine decided to locate the new capital at the site of old Byzantium claiming it to be New Rome. This location had several advantages. First, it was closer to the center of the empire, Second, it was surrounded almost entirely by water(great for defending), and an excellent harbor.
  • Activities Constantinople´s wealth and energy could be seen in its everyday activities the main one being street running.Merchant stalls lined the street and sold products . Citizens could also enjoy free entertainment at the city's large arena, the Hippodrome.
  • Other Facts Constantinople stood between Europe and Asia. Hagia Sophia was one of the structure's that towered over the capital. Constantine built the capital in 324 BCE.
  • Fall of Constantinople Two emperors ruined the city and their names were Leo III and Basil I. Then two emperors by the named of Basil I and Macedonian saw a city and empire that had fallen into despair and made a rebuilding program. Most things were rebuilt/restored but some of the rebuilding was lost.
