  • The narrator has a conflict with himself, trying to tell himself that he is not insane. He also has a conflict with the old man, more specifically, the old man's vulture eye.

  • The narrator holds up a lantern to shine into the vulture eye very precisely, and scares the old man.
  • Resolution
  • He kills the old man, suffocating him. And dismembers his body in a bathtub. Then shoving his dead body under his floor boards.
  • A neighbor reported a scream that came from the old man, and two police officers showed up at the narrators door. The narrator told the police the old man was gone and that it was his own scream in his dream, and the police officers sit down and have a chat with him.
  • As he was talking with two police officers, he drove himself mad. He thought he heard the old man's heart beating faster and faster when in reality it was his own.
