This impacts Ponyboy because he feels more aware of what going on around him, what's happening to the other greasers. He feels scared and worried, but he and Johnny decide to run away, and thats how Ponyboy begins his "new life" as a "hero".
Dallas (Dally) Winston was a tough, funny, vibrant guy. he was the one who would aways stand up for everyone. He shapes Ponyboy because he makes Ponyboy a tougher person. He shows him how to become the bigger person in every situation. Though Dally wasn't the nicest or the brightest, he was still the toughest.
One of the main conflicts in the book is the Greasers VS. the Socs. They don't get along and argree on nothing. This impacts Ponyboy because, though the won the fight, he watches many of his friends fight hard, some of them whom he'd thought were "softies".
