  • Dr. Mason Fitch Cogswell and his daughter, Alice, who was deaf. 
  • Thomas Gallaudet tutored Alice 
  • Dr. Cogswell realized something
  • We need more school for deaf people.
  • Dr. Cogswell had a daughter named Alice who was deaf. He had the choice of sending her across the ocean to the Braidwood Academy was but decided against it. They tried to find her a tutor.
  • Thomas Gallaudet and Laurent Clerc on a ship.
  • Thomas Gallaudet, saw how Alice was distant from the other kids. Later that afternoon, Alice was taught to write "HAT" by Gallaudet. Dr. Cogswell and Gallaudet discussed how Alice should haven an education and that he should be her tutor.
  • The first deaf school of America
  • We did it!
  • Dr. Cogswell soon relized that a school was need for all deaf people Gallaudet was chosen to go to Europe and learn about educating someone that is deaf. His goal was to create a school in the United States for all deaf people.
  • Deaf people could go to school.
  • While being in Europe for a while, he realized there was no time to master everything to teach the deaf, so he decided to go back to the states. Laurent Clerc volunteered to go with him back to America. On the 51 day voyage, Clerc taught Gallaudet LSF and Clerc was taught English.
  • When getting to the states, Gallaudet and Clerc started raising funds to create a new school.  On April 15, 1817 The American Asylum for the Instruction of Deaf and Dumb Persons opened in Hartford, Connecticut. The first student was Alice.
  • Deaf schools started opening across the country throughout the years. ASL became more accepted in school class rooms and in public. Deaf people were able to get an education.
