The Wiesel family lives in the ghetto in Sighet among other Jews, when at first foreign Jews are sent away in train cars, as the other Jews choose to ignore warning signs and a poor man by the name of Moishe the Beadle at the end of 1942.
After Passover, Hungarian police begin beating them, forcing them to run, and making them wait for an overcrowded, hot train to take them to a concentration camp.
Elie Wiesel and his father get separated from Elie's mother and sister, and by lying about their age, stay in the worst concentration camp, where Elie begins to slowly lose faith and men are beaten and freezing daily in Auschwitz.
In the next concentration camp,Buna, Elie and his dad's work is easier and they have a nicer block leader. Elie begins to feel his dad as a burden and learns to give away his things when first asked because people will take them away anyways. During this time, a bomb is dropped on the camp and people begin to restore hope.
