This story is set during Puritan times, where the English left England due to religious persecution and came to Salem Massachusetts for freedom but they still had a lot of religious rules. Susanna English is a young Puritan girl and she is feeling left out. The others girls are leaving her out of things and not telling her what's going on but she knows they are doing something bad.
Things for Susanna and her family get really bad because Joseph tells them her dad is going to be arrested and her brother Will who is over seas is not back yet. So Sussana and her sister have to live with the Putnam family. Susanna wants to tell the truth but she is scared I think she should have just told the truth about what she knows. She sees that no one is telling the truth and she feels guilty. Her dad has left for Boston jail and her mom is going to. In the Boston Jail they can go out in the day and go to jail at night.
December 1691 "Tituba only wakes the magic in the heart...what's in the hand Mary, Elizabeth, Abigail..." (Chapter 2) Susanna feels upset and left out when the other town girls leave her to go in the reverend's house with Tituba and she also spies them in the woods. She hears Tituba saying things she does not understand and the other girls are not behaving like Puritans.
(Chapter 7 page 74) During Christmas time Susanna's house as plum cake and lots of treats and cakes and this is forbidden by the Church. Susanna's dad was different as well because he did not believe in slaves and he went to a different church from the other Puritans. This made Susanna's family different. Ann Putnam is the leader of the group of girls that meet with Tituba and they saying that some women they don't like are witches. Susanna finds out when a lady comes into her moms shop and tells her mom that the doctor says one of the sick children have witchcraft in them. Susanna knows this is not true but when she goes to see Ann and stop all these lies Ann says she will blackmail her family.
Susanna and her boyfriend hear and see crazy things happening. People are being accused of witch craft and being trialed in the court and church. Even a five year old is accused and some of the men and women get hanged. Susanna feels guilty that she knows the truth and her mom tries to help some of the women who are being accused of witchcraft and then the priest and strict towns people accuse her and she gets arrested for witchcraft!
On September 22 Susanna speaks to Mr. Brattle and he believes her story after she swears it is true. Brattle does a campaign and send letters about her story to every town. Her family is separated because of all of this and now her brother is finally back. 1697 Susanna and Johnathan get married and she goes on a trip with her brother. She has come back to Salem in 1706 to forgive Ann the girl who blackmailed her family who is now asking for forgiveness and she doesn't want to forgive but she does. Ann puts her hand in hers and Susanna feels peace.
Bridget Bishop wears red and the Puritans say this is from the devil and on June 10 she is hanged. Susanna sees this and she is guilty and upset. Then on July 19, Rebecca Nurse, Sarah Good, Sarah Wild, Susannah Martin, and Elizabeth Putnam are also hanged. Later there are stories of witch craft in the other colonies. This is it for Susanna and she tells Joseph everything from the beginning. She even says that how she wanted to be part of this group of girls. Joseph is angry.
