  • Dred, we must migrate West into the land of opportunity and you must come along.
  • St. Louis, Missouri 1830
  • After travelling from Virginia to Alabama and now to Missouri, we have finally reached and rested upon a location.
  • Unexpectedly in 1832...
  • Oh no Master Peter Blow died
  • Dr. John Emerson became Dred Scott's new owner. They moved to Illinois for two years and then moved to the Wisconsin Territory where Scott got married.
  • Scott's extended stay in Illinois and Wisconsin, which were Free states, led him to going to court to make a claim to freedom. After many trials, the Supreme Court ruled that since he was a slave and was property, he had no right to sue.
  • I deserve to be free!
  • This decision by Supreme Court demonstrated the major arguments of slavery over this time period. This verdict enraged Northerners but encouraged Southerner's institution.
  • LEGACY
  • This verdict deepened the conflict between the North and South and The decision greatly influenced the nomination of Abraham Lincoln to the Republican Party and his subsequent election, which in turn led to the South's secession from the Union.
