What does it mean to be a mandated reporter?
As teachers, we are required by law to report suspected child abuse. This includes physical, emotional or sexual abuse, or neglect.
Know the signs
Signs of abuse include (but are not limited to) - physical marks, bruises, burns - strange or inconsistent explanations of injuries - abrupt changes in behavior - obvious lack of medical care - malodorous/ clothing dirty, ill-fitting, or inappropriate for weather - secretive behaviors - sexualized behaviors - expressing worry about safety of siblings
First call the CWS screener at 707-464-3191 ext 2708 (Del Norte) or 707-445-6180 (Humboldt) and make verbal report. The screener will tell you if a written report is needed. If so, complete Suspected Child Abuse Report Form at ag.ca.gov/childabuse/pdf/ss_8572.pdf and file within 24 hours.
