Edward's death/ Harold's crowning
William's claim to the throne
William's decision to attack England
Edward the confesser died in the year of 1066 after he saw a comet. He then realized that he was going to have bad luck. He died the day after. Harold Godwinson was his son-in-law. He became king the day of Edward's death.
English vs. Vikings
After Harold became king England, a man named William, Duke of Normandy, came and told him that since Harold swore that he would become king after Edward died it was going to happen. Harold refused to give up the throne, so William then started to plan his revenge on him....
Battle of Hastings
Here is where William and his French people then started to plot against Harold and his English people.
William crowned king of England
Meanwhile while the French were planning their revenge, Harold Godwinson and Harold Hardrada were in war. In other words, Hardrada said that somebody told him he was going to be king after Edward's death. So they went to war for the throne. The vikings got defeated and William went back home.
The battle of Hastings was a really big fight against the French and the English. It was a long and bloody battle but the French ended up beating the English.
After the battle of Hastings, William went to England and took over the throne. He then became known as William the Conqueror.
