In April 1978 a pro soviet government took control in Afghanistan. It was toppled when Hafizullah Amin took over. At first the soviets supported him, but when rumors spread about Amin asking America for support, Brezhnev took action and he was assassinated.
After Amin was assassinated the soviets replaced him by pro-Soviet Babrak kamal. The soviets stayed in Afghanistan for ten years fighting opponents of Babrak Kamal
The soviet Union invaded Afghanistan to protect its interests in a neighboring state. The Americans believed that this was another attempt to spread communism abroad, so they worked hard to resist it.
Between 25 December 1979 and January 1980, more than 50 000 soviet troops were sent to Afghanistan to restore order and protect the PDPA from the mujahideeen. Brezhnev said the soviet union was only complying with the 1978 treaty of friendship, cooperation and good neighborliness that former president taraki had signed
