an important message Sherman Alexie want us to see in The Absolute True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, is that racism and discrimination can lead to the death of many cultures if it persists for a long time.
An Important lesson Sherman Alexie
"We were supposed to make you give up being Indian, your songs and stories and language and dancing, everything, we weren't trying to kill Indian people, we were trying to kill Indian culture"
Want us to Learn in A True Story of a Part Time Indian" is that
Reservations were meant ti be prisons you know? Indians were supposed to move onto the reservation and die.we were supposed to disappear, but somehow or another Indians have forgotten that reservations were meant to be death camps
Racism and Discrimination can lead to the death of many cultures if it persists for a long time
"If that were true, then wouldn't all white people be successful?"
"I know, I know, but some Indians think you have to act white to make your life better. Some Indians think you become white if you try to make your life better, if you become successful."
This Scene shows the moment when Mr.P confesses to Arnold about how the white people are "killing Indian Culture" this shows how Racism can lead to Cultures being eradicated slowly, and how the white culture would consume other cultures slowly but surely.
Arnold noticed how his tribe has nothing to live up to, they are all wasted on alcohol and completley forgot how the rez was meant to kill them all off, and they started living with that fact like it's found in other cultures as well, they all gave up, and Arnold doesnt want to become like his tribe, he doesnt want to let what the white did to his tribe to happen to him
Arnold approaches his new friend Gordy by saying how in the Rez, people tend to act like white people, think like white people, and do everything they can like white people so they can become succesful in life, this shows how the indians are slowly being killed by the white men, not by guns, not by steel, but with just spreading their culture into theirs and teaching them how the indian culture is unsuccesful, and is better to be absorbed into the white culture so you can achieve what you want in life, but yet his friend Gordy, responds that, white people are not all successful.
