The highway man goes to visit Bess and informs her that he is off to do some robbing. He says to Bess, "Yet, if they press me sharply, and harry me through the day, Then look for me by moonlight, Watch for me by moonlight, "I'll come to thee by moonlight, though hell should bar the way."
"Marching- marching- King George's men came marching, up to the old inn-door" The red coats come to the inn, in search for the highway man.
The landlord welcomes the red coats into his home. "They said no word to the landlord. They drank his ale instead".
However, "They gagged his daughter, and bound her, to the foot of her narrow bed" As well as a gun pointed at her chest.
The red coats devised an ambush for the highway man. As soon as he returned, they would shoot and kill him.
Bess heard the trotting of the highway man's hoarse nearing the inn. She reached the trigger of a gun, and shot herself. The sound of the gun shot would serve as a warning to the highway man to turn around.
