And now for Jean-Baptiste Lamarck!
Flore françoise - A book on the plant life of France!
Evolution happens according to a predetermined plan!
Last week, you learned all about Charles Darwin and his theory of evolution. Now, you'll hear from Jean-Baptiste Lamarck!
I believe that the long necks of giraffes evolved as generations of giraffes reached for ever higher leaves.
Lamarck was in the front rank of French naturalists after releasing Flore francoise. He also originated the distinction between vertebrates and invertebrates!
It was also Lamarck that formally proposed a gradualistic theory of evolution. This theory suggested that traits acquired during an individual's lifetime in response to environmental stimuli could be passed on.
Thanks for watching! Stay tuned for more on Evolution.
The theory also stated that traits could arise, or become more developed, through the use of an organ or portion of the body.
As species evolve, they become more and more complex. They go from a simple organism to a greatly complex species in matter of generations. These complex traits will be passed onto offspring.
