  • United States government had placed a tariff on items like wool clothing, iron and other materials that were made in other countrTheies in order to make them more expensive.
  • In 1832, South Carolina decided to take a dramatic stand. In March of 1832, South Carolina declared that the tariffs on imported goods were “null and void” (did not count) in the state of South Carolina.
  • The young nation faced its most dangerous crisis yet. President Jackson let it be known that, if necessary, he personally would lead the U.S. Army to enforce the law. Congress supported the President by passing an act, authorizing the president to use military power to enforce the laws
