  • Should the western territories be broken into two different places or be kept the same?

  • I think we should secretly cross the border into Kansas and ruin their establishment.
  • Are you sure? I don't know about that
  • Popular Sovereignty - In 1854 a deal had to be mad with the southerners to make the territory into two, believe that this would give the right to residents to vote upon slavery.
  • Kansas Nebraska Act - January of 1854, a bill was introduced to congress. If it was approved it would repeal the Missouri Compromise and establish popular sovereignty in both territories. With the help of others this became a law in in Mat of 1854
  • Violence Erupted- In March of 1855, Kansas held and election for their territory. The Border Ruffians crossed the border into Kansas and voted illegally.
  • The Sack of Lawrence- This was a town founded by antislavery settlers, they were accused of being traitors and people called the sheriff on them and had them arrested. A posses of proslavery men attacked the settlers and burned down their homes.
  • The Pottawatomie Massacre - Once the news from Lawerence reached John Brown, he immediately took action not realizing that he had mistaken the posse for and wanted to seek revenge.
  • Bleeding Kansas - The massacre caused dozens of incidents in Kansas. 200 people died and this was known as the violent battlefield in the civil war.
