Storyboard Text

  • Sure thing sweetheart. On July 16, 1969, Apollo 11 launched from Cape Kennedy.
  • Dad, can you please tell me about Apollo 11?
  • There was a national goal set by John F. Kennedy: to land the spaceship  with a group of people on the moon and then go back to Earth.
  • Who were the crew members?
  • The crew members were Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, and Edwin (Buzz) Aldrin.
  • Oh I've heard of Neil Armstrong, we talked about him a little bit at school today!
  • On July 19, Apollo 11 had flown behind the moon, losing contact with Earth. Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong spent 21 hours and 36 minutes on the moon’s surface.
  • Whoah, I want to go to the moon too!
  • The flight back to the Earth was 195 hours, 18 minutes, and 35 seconds, which is about 8 days. Apollo 11 landed in the Pacific Ocean. The recovery ship, USS Hornet, was 13 miles away from Apollo 11’s landing.
  • The landing back at Earth was on July 24, 1969; 12:50 p.m. EST.
  • Maybe you'll go one day!
  • Wow, going to the moon sounds so fun!
