  • Thomas Jefferson 68
  • Federalists and Republicans were two distinct political parties that were formed in the mid 1790's. Federalists were people who supported the policies of the Washington administration. Republicans were people who wanted to limit the governments power.
  • The XYZ Affair
  • The Federalists and the Republicans are very different from each other. The Federalists thought that the Public Office should be held by honest and educated men of property who would protect the rights of all the nations people. The Republicans had thought that the central government should be controlled by few men or as they would say ordinary men.
  • Alien and Sedition Acts
  • We will not do any more attacks on your ships
  • In 1796 John Adams was nominated by the Federalists to be the president instead of the vice president. He had won the votes against Jefferson with 71 votes to 68 votes.
  • Domestic and Foreign Affairs
  • The french was had seized the American ships that carried a cargo to Britain.
  • Aliens are immagraints living in a country who were not citizens. The Americans were scared to know or find out if the aliens would remain loyal if the United States and France went to war. A sedition is activities aimed at weakening the established government.
  • The Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions had claimed that the Alien and Sedition Act violated the constitution. The Federalists had urged John Adams to declare war on France. He didnt want to do that so he had seeked to get peace with France. In the 1800's France and the United States had agreed to a treaty to stop their attacks on American ships.
